Naila
Nabil Hamdy, Lecturer in Journalism and Mass Communication at AUC, is a 1996 graduate
of the Adham Center for Television Journalism. She is also a television journalist
who has covered numerous news events for a variety of prominent international
television stations.

Hamdy began her career as a trainee
at CBS News, starting work on the day President Sadat was assassinated. Since
1981 she has worked as a producer/reporter and videotape editor for a large number
of stations, ranging from CBS News (American TV), ZDF, Ch. N24, Pro7 (German TV
stations), ARTE (German/French TV), SBS TV (Australian TV) to the Canadian National
Film Board. With more than twenty years of professional journalism experience,
Hamdy has been involved in the coverage of many major news events in the area
including the Gulf War, the terrorist activities of the 1990's, Egypt's 1992 earthquake,
the first Intifada, the return of Arafat to Palestine, the Luxor massacre, the
Egypt Air crash, and the Pope's visit to Egypt. She has also produced a vast number
of news features and news documentaries on topics ranging from politics, economics,
social issues, art, culture, and travel to human-interest stories. She continues
to freelance as a producer and consultant for several stations.
Hamdy also has experience in other
areas of mass communications: advertising, development communication, documentary
film production and radio broadcasting. She has conducted workshops in online
journalism and computer-assisted reporting in both newsrooms and educational institutions.
She is a frequent speaker on a range of issues, including trends affecting journalism,
technology and convergence, the Internet for journalists, the Internet as a publishing
medium for journalists, cyber communities, media and democracy, and television
news coverage of the Middle East.
Hamdy joined the faculty at AUC
in 1997. During that year she taught courses in the television journalism masters
degree program. She has since then taught or continues to teach courses in diverse
areas of Journalism and Mass Communications including reporting, editing and design,
television news production, electronic newsgathering, new media studies, and communication
theory, and has also developed and introduced the first online journalism course
at the American University in Cairo. In fact she can be described as a journalism
professor specializing in training young journalists to speak the different media
"languages" of print, broadcast and new media.
Hamdy's research interests include
Information Communication Technologies, Computer Mediated Communication, Online
Journalism, and Development Communication. She has conducted studies on Egyptian
news websites, Egyptian Internet users, Islamic websites, and the use of the Internet
in development. Hamdy received her BA in Communication Arts (Mass Media studies)
from the University of San Francisco, California, and her MA from the American
University in Cairo, and is currently enrolled at Cairo University as a Ph.D.
candidate. She has also attended a training course on teaching techniques and
strategies for online journalism and computer assisted reporting at the Poynter
Institute, Florida.
She is a member of several professional
associations including the Broadcast Educators Association (BEA) and the Arab-United
States Association for Communication Educators (AUSACE). She is a contributing
editor to the electronic journal Transnational Broadcasting Studies(TBS).
Hamdy is an Egyptian national who
was born in Japan and has lived in Panama, Cuba, England, Holland, the USA and
Egypt. She is the mother of two children.
