New Name and New Director for the Adham Center
A former CBS News Middle East correspondent has taken over the helm of the newly renamed Adham Center for Electronic Journalism at The American University in Cairo. Lawrence Pintak is replacing the center’s founder, Abdallah Schleifer, who is retiring. A veteran of 30 years in journalism on four continents, Pintak has contributed to many of the world’s leading news organizations.

From the New Director
Exactly 25 years after first setting foot in the Middle East, I find myself once more setting up an apartment in an Arab capital as I assume a new appointment as director of the Adham Center. Though I have been in and out of the region frequently over the years, I had not anticipated moving back here. However, my writing and research since 9/11 has focused on the nexus between communications and policy in the Muslim world, set against the changing nature of the media in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Cairo – and the Adham Center in particular – is at the crossroads of those changes. I can think of no place better suited to witnessing firsthand – and influencing – this evolution.

Adham Center Director S. Abdallah Schleifer Retires
After 22 years of service at the American University of Cairo, S. Abdallah Schleifer is retiring as head of the Adham Center for Television Journalism. Schleifer plans to concentrate on writing, reading, and becoming "a gentleman and a scholar," but don't worry -- he will remain connected with the Center he established and developed.

TBS Journal Publishes First Print Edition
Transnational Broadcasting Studies (TBS) is taking an historic step. After six years and thirteen electronic issues, TBS is publishing in two formats for the first time -- one online, the other printed. The online issue was published in May, followed a month later by the print edition, which includes peer-reviewed academic papers. The journal is available through distributor AUC Press from mid-June.

Former Adham Center Intern Linda Vester Hosts FOX Talk Show
When Linda Vester first came to Egypt as a Fulbright scholar from 1988 to 89, she worried that she was making a huge professional mistake. As it turns out, Vester draws on her experience living in Egypt and interning at the Adham Center all the time in her job as host of DaySide with Linda Vester, one of FOX New Channel's hottest news talk shows.

Mona El Tahawy ('92) Swaps Reporting for Commentary After 9/11
For Adham Center graduate Mona El Tahawy, the events of September 11, 2001 represented a personal as well as an historical turning point. El Tahawy had been living in the US for a year when she turned on the TV one morning to learn that planes had hit the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington. Finding she could no longer trust herself to be objective about unfolding events in America and the Arab world, she quit news reporting and took up opinion writing and TV punditry instead.

Sony Gallery Hosts 'John Feeney Retrospective: 40 Years Photographing Egypt'
The Sony Gallery for photography celebrated its third photo exhibition for the year 2005-2006 with a exhibition featuring the work of John Feeney. The show, titled "John Feeney Retrospective: 40 Years Photographing Egypt," featured more then 60 of Feeney's photographs of Egypt.

Sony Gallery and Special Collections Library Team Up to Produce History Exhibit of 'Nubia: Before the Flood'
In coordination with the Rare Books and Special Collections Library, the Sony Gallery hosted a special show, "Nubia: Before the Flood" February 8 to March 3, 2005. The opening ceremony was attended by AUC President David Arnold, Adham Center director S. Abdallah Schleifer, and Zahi Hawass, the prominent Egyptian archaeologist and head of the Egyptian High Council of Antiquities.
