Adham Center
Awards Dinner Honors Broadcasting VIPs, Graduates
Salah
Negm, Al Arabiya's head of news and a pioneer of Arab TV satellite broadcasting,
was special guest of honor at the Adham Center's June 14, 2004 Annual
Awards Dinner, where Negm was appointed to the honorary faculty position
of Associate of the Adham Center.
Also honored at the Fountain Court banquet, attended by a star-studded
array of local broadcasting stars, were this year's Adham Center graduates
and an outstanding former Center graduate.
Characterizing Negm's contribution to the development of independent
satellite TV in Arabic as "historic," AUC president David
Arnold noted that Negm worked in the 1990s for BBC Arabic Television,
the short-lived but seminal first attempt at an all-news channel in
Arabic. Subsequently, he helped to plan and launch Doha-based Al Jazeera,
where he served as head of the news room. In 2002, Negm took over as
head of news of MBC TV at their new headquarters in Dubai Media City,
from which he participated in the planning and launching of Al Arabiya
on the eve of the 2003 Iraq War.
Under Negm's leadership, continued Arnold, Al-Arabiya has introduced
competition into the Arabic satellite world and set goals for responsible
and professional journalism that are now echoing through the Arab broadcasting
industry. President Arnold placed his remarks in the context of what
he called Arab satellite television's transformation of regional broadcasting,
resulting in "more vibrant political life" in the Arab world.
In response, Negm referred to the important role played by Adham Center
graduates in the new channels, where their presence was significant
and their skills were appreciated.
The Sheikh Kamal Adham Award for Outstanding Professional Performance
was presented to Nihal Saad ('95) by the center's director, Abdallah
Schleifer. Schleifer mentioned that as Nile TV's senior presidential
correspondent Saad has covered President Mubarak and major political
events since 1993. Her list of interviews of world leaders includes
President Bush, President Arafat, Secretary of State Colin Powell, UN
Secretary General Kofi Annan and many other figures of global importance.
She also has appeared on Larry King Live and other global news shows.
At the heart of the occasion were 2004 graduates Maha Shehbah, Maram
Said, Mary Tony, Yasmine Sharif, and Yasmine Tewfic, who received from
Dean Amir Mortagy their Adham Center professional certificates in Video
Journalism and from Prof. Abbas El Tounsi their Arabic Language Institute
certificates of proficiency in Broadcast Arabic. The graduates, scheduled
to receive their masters degrees in television journalism based on two
years of course work in the Center's workshop environment the following
day, showed their final projects in the Sony Gallery following the dinner.
