Wise Joins Adham Center
Lindsay
Wise has joined the Adham Center as managing editor of Adham Online
and deputy managing editor of Transnational Broadcasting Studies
journal. Wise's experience as both a journalist and an academic combine
to make her an ideal addition to the Center, particularly as TBS prepares
to launch a hard-copy edition with a peer-reviewed section.
Wise earned her B.A. in English and Foreign Affairs from the University
of Virginia and graduated with an M. Phil. in Modern Middle Eastern
Studies from St. Antony's College, Oxford University, where she earned
distinction for her thesis. Titled Words from the Heart: New Forms
of Islamic Preaching in Egypt, the thesis analyzed the phenomenon
surrounding popular Egyptian "tele-Islamist" Amr Khaled.
In addition to her academic career, Wise interned at wire services
and newspapers in the US, including Scripps Howard News Service,
States News Service and The Oregonian. She also worked
as a stringer for The Virginian Pilot and The New York Times.
At the University of Virginia, she was managing editor of the award-winning
campus newspaper The Cavalier Daily.

Wise was a Fellow at the American University in Cairo's Center for
Arabic Study Abroad (CASA) in the summer of 2004, when she met Adham
Center Director Abdallah Schleifer, who offered her the job. As managing
editor of Adham Online and deputy managing editor of TBS, Wise will
be responsible for reporting and editing pieces for both publications,
as well as maintaining their websites. At TBS, she joins forces with
managing editor Humphrey Davies, who has worked on the journal since
2002.
Wise said the job with Adham and TBS came along at a perfect time,
allowing her to remain in Egypt after completing her Arabic studies
at AUC. It also enables her to pursue her research interests, which
focus on the impact of mass media in the Arab and Islamic worlds, looking
particularly at how contemporary Islamist movements are adapting to
these new mediums.
"This is a great opportunity for me to keep academia and journalism
in my life at the same time," Wise said.
With a new hard-copy edition of TBS in the works, Wise also will play
an important role its launch. Her close ties with the Middle East Centre
(MEC) at Oxford University will benefit a new partnership between the
Adham Center and the MEC, which have agreed to co-publish TBS Journal.
In addition to the journal's online content, the hard copy will include
an academically refereed section, the editorial board of which will
be chaired by Wise's Oxford supervisor Dr. Walter Armbrust.
Schleifer, TBS's publisher and founder, feels that Wise's strong academic
interests in and professional skills will be particularly useful to
TBS. "We need someone with strong editorial skills and familiarity
with the field. She came along at the perfect time."
"We have a signature. We have evolved into the image I want,"
Schleifer said. "I want the content to grow." This is where
Wise comes in.
Wise said she hopes to "strengthen what already is so great about
TBS journal -- the interviews, media analysis and industry reporting
-- while at the same time broadening the scope of TBS to include more
in-depth looks at religious, entertainment and cultural programming,
all of which constitute a huge part of the satellite-viewing experience
in the region."
In taking over responsibility for the Adham Center's web site as well,
Wise is following in the footsteps of former TBS Managing Editor Sarah
Sullivan, who developed the concept of Adham Online on the eve of leaving
Egypt two and a half years ago. At that time, Sullivan returned to the
US to work for the Arab American Institute in Washington, D.C. She has
recently joined the Library of Congress as a web producer.
