Adham Center Director
at MT&R Seminar on Control Room
 |
| First
Lieutenant Josh Rushing with S. Abdallah Schleifer and
Control Room director Jehane Noujaim at Centcom, Qatar. |
S. Abdallah Schleifer,
director of the Adham Center, joined the award -winning filmmaker Jehane
Noujaim, two senior journalists from Al Jazeera, and the director of
International Relations Studies at the United States Military Academy
(West Point) at a seminar on the topic "Control Room: An
Inside Look at Al Jazeera" at the Museum of Television & Radio
(MT& R) in New York in mid-May. The panel was preceded by a screening
of Control Room, which was directed by Noujaim; Schleifer was
the film's Middle East executive producer. After the seminar the panel
members were hosted at a dinner along with a number of prominent figures
in American media by the president of the Museum, where a less formal
after-dinner discussion with the panel was chaired by James F. Hoge,
Jr. editor of Foreign Affairs.
The occasion for
the MT&R functions was Control Room's New York premiere,
scheduled for two nights later at New York's prestigious art cinema,
the Film Forum. Again Schleifer served on a seminar panel onstage at
the Film Forum following the main screening on opening night. Schleifer
also briefly appears in the film and the New York Times film critic
quoted one of Schleifer's comments in his review that appeared on the
same day as the premiere (May 21st). According to a June 3rd report
in Al Ahram Weekly, the documentary has broken box office records
at the Film Forum. For other reports see http://www.controlroommovie.com/site/01.html.

(Adham Center
involvement in Control Room was not limited to its director.
Hany Salama , a first year studet in the center's MA TV journalism program,
became so involved in the shooting, editing, and post production work
on Conrol Room that he took an extended leave of absence from
the program late last sping to serve as the film's second camera man
and co-producer. The Adham Center and its teschnical coordinator Jan
Sandle provided Jehane amd her group with both advice and facitilies
in the first phase of editing and the role of the center and Sandle
are acknowledged in the credits.)
Earlier this past semester the Adham Center director participated in
the Qatari Conference on Democracy and Free Trade (which included a
seminar organized by the Council on Foreign Relations on "Shaping
Public Opinion and Democratization: The Role of the Arab Media.")
The conference was organized by the Qatar Center for Gulf Studies. Schleifer
stayed on in Doha and then proceeded to Dubai, gathering material for
his survey article "The Gulf Media Mood (As Good As Ever)"
which appeared along with other contributions of his in the Spring-Summer
2004 issue of Transnational Broadcasting Studies (TBS 12)
Last March Schleifer presented a paper at Egypt's Supreme Council of
Antiquities on "Spiritual Dimensions of the Architecture of Hassan
Fathy" The talk was co-sponsored by the Islamic Art Network.
This past academic
year, as an activity for the Brooking's Institution's U.S.-Muslim World
Forum, Schleifer arranged for Adham Center participation in the Connect
Program, which enabled a pilot group of AUC students to communicate
via video-conferencing with students at Harvard, AUB, Clark University,
and Virginia Commonwealth University about U.S.-Muslim world relations,
with a particular emphasis on the role of the media in affecting perceptions
of the "other."
Similar concerns
have prompted the University of Michigan to initiate a "U.S. -Muslim
World Communications Documentary Project." The Adham Center director
has been appointed to the Advisory Board of the project.
As director of
the Sony Gallery for Photography Schleifer supervised two exhibitions
this past semester-"Turkey, the Living Tradition: Photographs by
Ismail Kucuk" and "Architectonics & Personae of a Cellular
Memory: Photographs by Ahmed Hamid."
But perhaps the most satisfying event of the year for the Adham Center
director was passage this past Spring by the AUC Senate of a package
of new courses for the undergraduate broadcasting specialization put
together by the Center in close cooperation with Dr. Hussein Amin, chair
of the department, and Dr. Ralph Berenger, head of the department's
Undergraduate Committee. The case for this new package,
which will greatly strengthen the undergraduate program was made at
the Senate by fellow faculty member Prof. Naila Hamdy, who will teach
two sections of one of the core courses in the new package this coming
Fall, and who is herself a graduate of the Center's MA program and a
PhD candidate at Cairo University. More details will appear in the next
issue of AdhamOnline.
