Transnational Broadcasting Studies, the e-journal of satellite television broadcasting published by the Adham Center for Television Journalism of the American University in Cairo, has re-launched with a new orientation-to focus exclusively on satellite television in the Arab and Islamic worlds.

This is a recognition of the special niche that TBS has built itself in the coverage and scholarship of Middle East transnational broadcasting since its launch in 1996. Jon Alterman, director of the Middle East Department at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, says, "TBS is truly unique…. It has no serious competition and is essential and required reading for anyone interested in satellite TV broadcasting to the Arab World." Renowned feminist scholar and contributor to this issue Fatima Mernissi comments that "I do consider you one of the most avant-garde information sources on the Arab media revolution."

At the same time, the new orientation allows TBS to extend its range. For the first time, Afghanistan and Kurdistan figure in TBS as well as India and the often over-looked Arab Maghrib.

TBS also includes excerpts from the forthcoming book Global Media Goes to War: the Role of News & Entertainment Media During the 2003 Iraq War, conference reports and papers, and a new feature-Michael Murrie's Technical Review. The Reviews page has been revamped to include a Book Essay by Ralph D. Berenger as well as shorter reviews (Books in Brief), and film reviews make their appearance for the first time.
