Adham Center Affiliate Tamer Abdalaal is back in the region as the newly appointed production manager of Dubai’s exciting digital satellite Business Channel. Tamer, who is an American-Egyptian dual national and one of the earliest Affiliate Alumni of the Adham Center, looks and moves like an American college football quarterback. But his youthful and earnest looks barely veil long experience and significant achievements in broadcasting.

Now as production manager at Dubai Business Channel Tamer is responsible for the channel’s entire production. Dubai Business Channel is the first exclusively global business news service broadcast free-to-air in the Arab world, and it presents a penetrating picture of world economic events as well as regional business news from a unique Middle Eastern perspective. According to critics it is rivaled only by al-Jazeera as the most professionally designed and paced Arab channels broadcasting today.

Tamer’s responsibilities include the editorial, technical and operational staff of the channel. He intends to establish a promotion and presentation department as well in the near future. Tamer was personally appointed by and reports directly to the Dubai Business Channel’s young charismatic director Rashid Murooshid, who defied conventional wisdom by getting the channel on-air within the past year in but a period of months.

Tamer describes the entire production staff at the channel—approximately 70 people—as “a kaleidoscope of nationalities and backgrounds, from seasoned professionals from the famous Financial Times Television in the UK to recent college graduates who will be trained in TV production.” The Dubai Business Channel, according to Tamer, has “the perfect mix of experience and vitality which will make this a very unique and fulfilling career building place.”

As for his own role Tamer says, “Apart from the organizational side of my responsibilities, I will also be hands-on in the technical, artistic and training aspects of every type of production, whether it be in programming, promotion or presentation.”

Prior to this appointment, Tamer had spent nearly a decade in Europe as one of the first of a number of AUC graduates who were to serve as the core staff of ART’s Broadcast and Production Center in Avezzano, outside of Rome. Tamer had already served as trainee broadcaster at the NBC affiliate in Los Angeles when he was hired by ART.

Tamer’s Promo Production Unit quickly commandeered the dominant role among all of ART’s production centers in quickly producing high-quality and creative promos; but this never quite measured up to Tamer’s aspiration to be work in a truly professional environment where he would be able to create and produce in strict accordance to international standards—an aspiration he now has achieved.

“Tamer Abdalaal was without question the hardest working, most dedicated and creative person we had at Avezzano” says Schleifer “but those are not necessarily the characteristics which were most appreciated at ART, where public sector-like politics at that time, and particularly in the months after I left, too often took priority over professionalism.

“I am delighted that Tamer now has the opportunity to work in such a professional environment. From the moment one clicks on Dubai Business Channel one gets a sense of their sincere striving to be as professional as anything on the air anywhere in the world. That this could be achieved in such a short time and by such a young man as their DG, Rashid Murooshid, is in itself amazing.
