Ali Belail has all the attributes that make
for a good TV correspondent--he writes well, follows current events,
has a strong sense of the theatrical, sounds authoritative and looks
good on camera. But he was bitten early on by the behind-the-camera
bug when he directed three BBC Arabic TV Service talk shows produced
at the Adham Center. So Ali, who had been working as an occasional freelance
producer, jumped at the chance when Orbit's executive director in Egypt,
Tarek El Kashef, offered him the opportunity to head a VTR unit responsible
for providing field reports for a daily three-hour Ramadan program called
Leilat Orbit. To develop the unit Belail recruited several other Adham
Center graduates such as Rasha El Sayed, Rania Kazak, and Rania Hegazy,
all class of 1999, to serve as field reporters.

The program's combination of live broadcasting and
youthful perspectives was a great success, and Orbit is now channeling
that momentum into a third satellite channel. The program that provides
the core for the new channel is called Al-Qahira al-Youm (Cairo Today),
which is aired live five days a week, three hours a day. The VTR unit
headed by Belail will play a vital role in this new channel's success.
As its name implies, the program includes segments on events in Cairo.
The VTR unit provides several daily reports on current events, news
and exhibitions. In addition to the staffers hired for the original
Leilat Orbit program, the channel has also added Adham Center graduates
Azza Shaaban (1997) as a producer/reporter and Maha Reda (1987), one
of the earliest Adham Center graduates, to coordinate all of the third
channel's Cairo productions.
Ali's boss, Tarek El Kashef, has been watching Ali
in action for many months now, and describes Ali as "a professional
who has the ability to simultaneously delegate and to rally, gathering
his associates around the issue at hand. He's as sweet as a pussycat
unless someone messes up. Then the pussycat becomes a tiger." El Kashef
has put forth a vision, and Ali Belail's responsibility is to implement
it: to extend the modern TV journalism format in Arab broadcasting.
Through Ali and his VTR unit, the Adham Center has provided a core link
in helping achieve that vision.
