Rasha El Sayed ('99) is now hosting her own show on one of Orbit's
newly launched TV channels. Rasha's show is called "Solo"
and airs on the Fann ( Art) channel, which joined Orbit's bouquet in
February 2004 with a special focus on the arts.
"It is nice to have one's show on a new channel. It makes you
feel as if you are one of the founders of this channel and you become
more attached to it with a better sense of belonging," said El
Sayed.
Shortly after she finished her graduate studies at the Adham Center,
Rasha was recruited by the Orbit network and she still reports for two
of Orbit's main shows-the daily al-Qahira al-Yawm ("Cairo Today")
and Mahalliyyat ("Local Scene") as a member of Ali
Belail's Field Reporting and Documentary unit. These two shows cover
a wide range of news.
"It is nice to go on different assignments everyday but what is
not nice is that you have to cover everything pertaining to different
fields, which requires more effort. On the other hand you don't get
bored" El Sayed says. With "Solo" El Sayed is a having
a totally different experience from field reporting. "This show
is much more organized and scheduled. I know at what time we will be
shooting and it is indoors," Rasha said.
"Solo" presents a soloist playing a particular musical instrument
every week who also tells the audience about the history of this instrument
and his own experience. Although El Sayed is considered to be the host
of the show, a maestro also appears with. His role is that of an expert
commenting professionally on the guest's works. As the host, Rasha is
supposed to simplify these comments, avoiding jargon to make it easy
for the audience to grasp the meaning.

"I address the audience's viewpoint and not anyone's specific
perspective. It's a show targeting ordinary people and that's why it
must be simple," she said.
El Sayed believes that the skills students acquire at the Adham Center
allow them to play remarkable roles in the field of broadcast journalism.
Graduates acquire both editorial and technical skills, she said. "Adham
Center graduates know how to report and work on features so you do not
need anyone to supervise your work, " El Sayed said. "You
are capable of leading the crew out in the field and you know how to
deal with people and ask questions."
She added that the center teaches students how to work under hard conditions
while producing reports that meet high professional standards.
"We learned not to compromise quality and professionalism,"
El Sayed said.
