Fascinated by
the idea of being able to transmit news to every household throughout
the world instantaneously, Reim Bashir ('99) is more or less doing just
that these days, roving about London as a free lance television news
producer. Right now Bashir serves such clients as BBC, CNN, Al Jazeera,
and Sky.
Bashir says she
always yearned to work in media and television. When she had the opportunity
to study Television Journalism at the Adham Center she jumped at the
chance.
As a reward for
her effort and performance, Reim received the Center's Outstanding Achievement
Award in 1999
Reim was then
chosen from among her graduate colleagues to intern for Reuters Television
in Cairo, where she assisted the producer and camera crew in covering
breaking national and international news events, from the Al Azhar student
riots to the millennium celebrations to interviewing Roger Moore as
newly appointed ambassador for UNICEF (her favorite part of the job!).
Reim also liaised
with Reuters' text services to write articles and features on prominent
national and international figures, as well as covering market reports
for the Egyptian stock market, etc. During that time she wrote an in-depth
feature on the threatened extinction of the Egyptian Tortoise which
went on to be published on several international news agency websites,
including those of CNN and ABC.
In 2000, Reim
left Reuters to pursue her second Master's degree when she was awarded
the British Council's prestigious and much sought-after Chevening Scholarship.
She did her second
one-year Master's in International Journalism at the University of Westminster
in the United Kingdom where she learned the fundamentals of radio and
television documentary-making.

Upon graduation
Reim was offered a job as an Arabic translator in Reuters Television
headquarters in London a week after the September 11attacks in the US.
Her job was to monitor Arabic news channels and translate breaking news
stories for incorporation into Reuters' outgoing news service. With
her Arabic skills she helped Reuters be the first to report Middle East
stories ahead of competitors .Since then she has branched out and become
a free lance producer offering her services as field producer, editor,
script writer and translator to a growing list of clients.
