Sahar Khamis, one of the
Adham Center's "old-timers" (she was in the first graduating class of 1988) is
now back at AUC as a part-time faculty member in the Journalism and Mass Communication
Department, after earning her Ph.D. in "Mass Media and Cultural Studies" from
the University of Manchester in England.
Enrolling as an undergraduate
in AUC's Mass Communications major in 1982, she was witness to the revival of
journalism education at AUC. She received her Bachelor's degree in 1986 as the
highest ranking student in her graduating class and was awarded AUC's highest
distinction, the President's Cup, along with the "Mohamed El-Beliedy Academic
Achievement Award" and the highly competitive "Mostafa Amin Journalism Award"
in recognition of her work as editor-in-chief of Caravan, AUC's student newspaper.
In 1986 Khamis enrolled
at AUC again, this time as a graduate student, to pursue her Masters degree in
Mass Communication, which she earned in 1989, as well as a Graduate Diploma in
Television Journalism, which she completed in 1988. It was here at the Adham Center,
according to Khamis that she had "the chance, for the first time, to practice
what is preached in media texts." It is this "applicability of theoretical knowledge"
in her graduate work at the Center that, Khamis says, she "found to be particularly
useful and valuable.
It was this practical
orientation to media study which inspired my interest in exploring real issues,
real problems and real people, an angle which I am always keen to focus on in
my academic life."

She also believes that
her work at the Center taught her all of the steps involved in producing an effective
TV news report "starting from the organization of my ideas in a systematic and
logical fashion to mastering the skills of good listening, good talking and good
note-taking." According to Khamis, "these skills proved to be great assets and
valuable resources" in handling the various media jobs (with The Wall Street Journal
and NHK-Japan Broadcasting Corporation, and contributing articles to Al- Ahram
and Al-Wafd) that she held after graduation and prior to leaving for England in
1996 to finish her Ph.D. But they also helped her with her Ph.D, particularly
in conducting fieldwork based largely on in-depth interviews and focus group discussion.
Her Ph.D. thesis "Egyptian
Rural Women and Television's public awareness programs" explored how and why Egyptian
rural women react to and interpret the government's TV messages on family planning
and literacy in different ways.
Since her return to Cairo,
Khamis has been working as a full-time faculty member in the Mass Communication
Dept. of Ain Shams University where she teaches a wide variety of media courses
and supervises graduate theses in mass media research. But it is her return to
AUC to teach an "Introduction to Mass Communication Research" that has most delighted
her, for it was here, at AUC, that Khamis says she has spent the happiest and
most rewarding years of her life.
